WOW - Part 1

Dear Readers...

Today I shall put my views on the how we work at the workplace, what mindset do we perceive and what we achieve.

Title "WOW" stands for Ways Of Working.

Starting from the day we get selected for a job, we are filled with joy of getting selected for the defined position. People often gets mistaken that they have got the job hence their life is going to be easy. But in reality, life starts to get complicated as they will be tested on various grounds and various situations. When the imaginations of easy life gets converted into the reality of difficult situations and continuous performance, employee feels his life has become hell, because the imagination & dreams did not come into existence. There starts the real problem called Job Dissatisfaction. It is the dangerous ever situation for employer and employee. Its is lethal enough for employer to loose an employee and for employee to loose a good organisation.

A bad start often gives a sad end & A good start is half a battle won...!!

So how to start your job on a good note ?  I have the answers for you.....

# As a new joinee in any organisation, always expect little from organisation and have a mindset to give.

# Cultivate habit to observe, speak less & listen more.

# Don't get carried away with the existing staff.

# Trust your abilities rather than anyone else.

# Don't think on negatives of organisation. Think of how you bring on the positive change.

# Have a smiling face with confidence & gratitude.

# Don't try to show off or dominate others by your position.

# Never talk about your previous employer or boss.

# Have a learning attitude and humble behavior.

# Never advise or interrupt others unless you are close enough to them.

# Help others and seek for help.

# Never assume anything on your own.

# Avoid oral communication & prefer e-mail.

# Be boss oriented rather than work oriented.

# Be social, not personal.

# As e new joinee never criticize people, policy or management systems.

# Read all the do's and don'ts of the organisation.

# Follow the policies and practices of organisation.

# Dress well and look pleasant.

# Discuss topics, not issues.

# Believe in the team-work.

Doing the above mentioned may look very easy and simple but difficult to apply because as we get to know people we become casual in approach but get noticed to management. A good impression from beginning gives good credit and respect as a person and keeps you away from all the complexities.

In the next part of "WOW" we shall discuss on issues faced by employees and employers and what could be the remedies to overcome. So don't forget to read the next blog.

Appreciation of Hard Work

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company. He passed the first interview, the director did the last interview, made the last decision. The director discovered from the CV that the youth’s academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, Never had a year when he did not score.

The director asked, “Did you obtain any scholarships in school?” The youth answered “none”.

The director asked,  “Was it your father who paid for your school fees?” The youth answered, “My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees”.

The director asked,  “Where did your mother work?” The youth answered, “My mother worked as clothes cleaner. The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect”.

The director asked,  “Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?” The youth answered, “Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me”.

The director said, “I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then see me tomorrow morning”.

The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid. The youth cleaned his mother’s hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother’s hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water.

This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother’s hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future. After finishing the cleaning of his mother’s hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother. That night, mother and son talked for a very long time. Next morning, the youth went to the director’s office.

The Director noticed the tears in the youth’s eyes, asked:  “Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?” The youth answered,  “I cleaned my mother’s hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes”.

The Director asked,  “please tell me your feelings”. The youth said, “Number 1, I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, there would not the successful me today. Number 2, By working together and helping my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done. Number 3, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship”.

The director said,  “This is what I am looking for to be my manager. I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of others to get things done, and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired”. Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company’s performance improved tremendously.

Something to learn :   If one doesn’t understand and experience the difficulty it takes to earn the comfort provided by their loved ones, than they will never value it.  The most important thing is to experience the difficulty and learn to value hard work behind all the given comfort.

The Interview (Part 2)

Continued from The Interview (Part 1)..

After the first round of interview in a confused state of mind, I gave myself some time and relaxed. Early in the morning today, I got an idea to call Mr. Mind and Mr. Heart to give a case study and test their decision making abilities.

So I called both of them and asked to remain present together. I would narrate them a case study and they were supposed to give their suitable solutions and suggestions as the story in case study proceeds.

The case study was something like..

"You are travelling in bus for a long journey. The destination town is unknown and would take route by passing through 2 villages. Each village would symbolize something or give a hint about the destination town."

I asked both of them for any queries or requirement to travel ?

Mind asked "Sir, answers of this case study would confirm my job ?  How much would be the approximate distance ?  Would the journey be safe ?  The bus would be air conditioned or not ?  What is to be done after reaching the town ?"

I was flooded by question from Mr Mind and was feeling irritated to answer. His decision making was based on logic and wanted to know the benefits of travelling the the unknown town.

Mr. Heart on the other hand was sitting quietly without any questions or anxiety. He simply said he would be ready to travel.

This is the basic difference between mind and heart. Mind requires logic and thinks of his benefits in every situation while the heart remains patient and calm. The mind creates a mass of questions and overthinking which leads to more ambiguities and doubts.

I moved ahead narrating the case study further and added  "The 1st village that passed was very shabby, the roads were in a poor condition, the people roaming around were dirty and dressed in a strange manner."

I asked both the candidates about their views. Mr. Mind started by giving his immature judgement saying " Sir, I think we should not continue the journey as the 1st village gives some clue that the destination city would be very dirty and there would be no benefit in reaching there. We must analyse this situation to come some conclusion and return back."

I asked Mr. Heart about his stand on this situation. He said, "Sir, I don't judge or decide on a single statement. I would like to proceed further with patience and positive approach and readiness to face unfavourable consequences. What matters for me is the destination and goal rather than any other immaterial factors or situations."

I was happy to hear that reply from Heart as he showed the positive intent and matured behavior.

I further added, "We have reached the 2nd village and found it was very clean, the people around the village were decent and well mannered. The village was well developed and had many houses that were painted fresh and colourful. The village was follower of laws and rules."

Before I ask anything, Mind started, Sir, I would change my previous decision and would like to move ahead towards the destination The village is so good and being more close to the destination, I think the destination town would be more beautiful worth visiting. I am eager to reach the destination. We must take a shortcut way to reach faster."

I was left wondering how mind changed the decision and got attracted towards the beauty of village and again reacted in an immature way and prejudged the result. As he described himself in the first interview round that he is logical, quick decision maker, analytical and fast decision maker, he showed all his characteristics here. But he was more confused and changed his statements & judgement with change in situations.

Now I was eager to listen to Mr. Heart's reply. He said, "Sir, I would still not judge the 2nd village and still have a same feeling to move ahead without giving more importance to this village. I feel our goal is yet to be achieved and we must focus on the same with same positive intent ."

I was happy and getting near to my decision of choice making and choosing any one out of the two.

Then I moved further in the case study and said, "The destination town is called LIFE, where Mr. Mind has proved to be more effective and powerful for success. On the other hand Mind was always changing and confusing and sometimes immature. The decisions and statement coming from Heart were full of patience and positive, while Mind give you mixed statement based on favoutable and unfavourable situation.

I undoubtedly chose Mr. heart based on above situations and his approach for the ever lasting job. I would always ask Mr. Heart for any decisions to be made for success.

The Interview (Part 1)

I had a new recruitment for a very important profile of DECISION MAKING. The decision of what is right and what is wrong, the decision of what is done and what needed to be done, the decision to prioritize between action and thoughts.

I had 2 eligible candidates for this post and I had to make a best choice between them. The name of candidates were
1. Mr. Mind
&
2. Mr. Heart

Both the candidates looked promising. I opened the Resume of both the candidates. But I could not judge their who was best for me. So I decided to call them one by one.

I called Mr. Mind for the initial discussion. He came in and asked for a seat. I did not plan any questions to be asked so I started with "Say something about yourself" like majority of interviewers start.

Mr. Mind started with "Good Morning sir. I am Mr. Mind, I remain on top of everyone. I am a quick to react, instant decision maker and smart enough to tackle difficult situations and available 24×7. I have an ability to think on various matters at a single point  of time. I make decisions based on various analysis. I use various logic tools and judge situations. I have an award of quick decision making with applied shortcuts. I have a degree in  Masters of Logic and hence I think I am the perfect choice for everyone."

I said "Ok. That is enough for your introduction. You can wait outside till I call you again."

He described about his qualities, personality, achievements and capacity. But did not tell anything about his carrier path and where he wants to reach in life. But he looked energetic initially.

Then I called Mr. Heart and asked him the same question "Say something about yourself."
Mr. Heart started with "Good morning sir. I am Mr. Heart. Thank you for giving me opportunity to be here. I am a silent sort of person and try to focus on what is the right way to act. I believe in slow but concrete decision making. I believe in God and make decisions in an ethical manner. I have a quality to highlight what is right and what is wrong and my decisions are based on the same principles. My decisions are well judged but sometimes tough to implement. But I am confident of success in long term."

I said, "You may wait for my next call".

Mr. Heart looked like a person of values and ethics, he was composed and calm in approach. He seemed to be totally opposite personality from Mr. Mind.

One thing that pinched me about Mr. Heart was that he can focus on one thing at a time and seemed a bit slow. On the other side Mr. Mind had an ability to multi task, apply shortcuts to achieve success and uses more of logic into his job.

I was more confused as both the candidates were totally different personalities and it was difficult to judge which one of them would give me success. I was not sure how to evaluate and what to do next. So I asked both of them to take a  leave and wait for my next telephonic call.

I has a feeling that it was going to be a tough but interesting interview to evaluate and select between 2 different but effective personalities. Let us see what happens next. When the first round of interview was so interesting, I feel excited for the coming round of interviews.

This is it for this blog. next round of interview to be conducted within 24 hours. Stay tuned to the blog. You can also subscribe through email or bookmark my blog page http://kushal9049.blogspot.com
